レバノン杉は国のシンボルで、国旗にもなっている。古代には大森林があったらしいが、今ではほとんど残っていない。
A cedar tree is the symbol of Lebanon, as it is depicted in its national flag. Thousands of years ago, the hills of Lebanon were said to be covered with deep forest of cedars. Unfortunately, very few of them have survived to this day.
レバノンは、私が最も気に入った国の一つです。美しい自然景観と、貴重な古代文明遺跡の数々が、この小さな国に一杯詰まっています｡人口の約半数がキリスト教徒のためか、街の雰囲気はとても解放的で、女性の服装もアラブ世界では最もファッショナブルでした。今、この国では、長い内戦の後の復興が急ピッチで進められています。首都ベイルートがかつて中東のパリと呼ばれた活気を取り戻し、平和な多民族・多宗教社会が復活するよう、祈ってやみません。
Lebanon is one of my most favourite countries. It is a country full of natural beauty and cultural heritage. After the years of civil war, the country is now under rapid process of reconstruction. I sincerely hope that the people of Lebanon will restore peaceful and prosperous multi-racial, multi-religious society.
Yemen イエメン

この１リアル紙幣の裏に描かれているのは、『キャット』と呼ばれる、一種の薬草です。イエメン人は皆いつもこの草を口の中でクチャクチャとかんでいます。ある種の覚醒作用があるのだそうです。
The one rial bill depicts 'kyat' trees, whose leaves are chewed by virtually every Yemeni man. It is said to be a kind of drug.

The five-rial note depicts the fortress city of Kawkaban and its sister city, Shibam.

私がイエメンを訪問したのは、1990年、南北イエメンが統一して数ヵ月後でした。旧南イエメンの首都アデンでは、まだ旧南イエメン通貨ディナールが使われていましたが、私がたまたま見つけたこのお札は、南イエメン独立（1967年）前の、英領南アラビア時代のものだったのです。1ディナールは約300円と貧乏バックパッカ−には高額でしたが、デザインが気に入ったので記念に持ってきました。
I visited Yemen in 1990, just months after the reunification of two Yemens. In the former South Yemeni capital of Aden, I found this note, which was undoubtedly from before the independence of South Yemen (1967), from the time of British South Arabia. I brought this note despite its value of US$2.20, a fortune for budget back packers, because I liked the design of the note.
イエメンはすばらしい国です。その観光地としての魅力はエジプトにも勝るとも劣らないと思いますが、残念ながらあまり知られていません。 でも、だからこそ、エジプトのように観光化されておらず、面白くユニークな旅が出来る国なのです。 イエメンはアラビア半島の南端にある小さな国ですが、山国で、季節風が雨をもたらすため、緑が多く、農業も盛んです。 多くの人々は、今でも伝統衣装をまとい、数百年前に建てられた石造りの家に住んでいます。 アラブの伝統が最も色濃く残っている国、それがイエメンなのです。 この国の旅行記と写真も早めに公開したいと思っています。
Yemen is situated at the southern tip of Arabian peninsula. One would imagine its climate is hot and dry, but it isn't. Yemen is a mountainous country, and the monsoon wind brings rain to its slopes, thus its name of 'Arabia Felix'. Many people still live in traditional stone houses, wearing traditional clothes. It has huge tourism potential, but its charm is still not widely known.

どんなに有名であっても、観光客がうじゃうじゃいようとも、エジプトの魅力は変わりません。王家の谷の古墳に描かれた5000年前の壁画は、まるで昨日描かれたようです。最近は遺跡だけでなく、砂漠体験ツアーも人気があります。
Although the country is very touristy, Egypt is very attractive and well worth a visit.
Syria シリア

表面に描かれているのは、ローマ時代の円形劇場です。シリアに限らず、地中海周辺の中東諸国にはローマの遺跡がたくさんあります。この地域を旅行すると、かつてのローマ帝国の巨大さを実感します。
The front side of this note depicts a Roman amphitheatre. Not only Syria, but many countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea are dotted with Roman ruins. One wonders how big was the mighty empire.

シリアもパルミラの遺跡をはじめ多くの見所があり、近年観光で訪れる人が増えています。シリア人はアラブ人とはいっても、ほとんど西欧人と同じ顔立ちをしています。ローマの血がたくさん混じっているのかもしれません。
Syria has become one of the popular tourist destinations in the Middle East. Many archaeological sites and exotic towns wait to be explored. Syrian people are also known to be very hospitable.
Turkey トルコ

近代トルコ建国の父、ケマル・アタチュルクです。政教分離の近代国家を打ち立てた彼は、当時としては類まれな洞察力の持ち主だったといえるでしょう。現在の同国の繁栄の基礎を築いた人です。しかしトルコは今、大変なインフレに悩まされています。この2万リラ札、私が行った頃には5円程度の価値しかありませんでした。
Hyper-inflation plagues this country. This 20,000 lira note was worth only a few cents.

古代遺跡に、絵のようなビーチ、エキゾチックなバザール、温泉、美しい山々と、トルコの魅力は尽きることがありません。安全だし、インフラがしっかりしているため、観光客には大変居心地のいい国です。
Turkey has everything. Picturesque beaches, tasty food, intriguing ancient ruins, beautiful mountains, and even hot springs. Who can ask for more?
